Thinking About Working With a Personal Trainer?
Here’s What to Expect with Personal Training at Optimize Physiotherapy
Ask ten people what a personal trainer does, and you’ll probably hear the same answer: “They help you work out.”
At Optimize, that’s only one piece of the puzzle.
Sometimes we’re helping someone feel confident walking into a gym for the first time. Other days we’re preparing an athlete for the next season, guiding someone back to exercise after an injury, or helping someone keep up with their kids without feeling sore or exhausted afterward.
Strength looks different for everyone. Your training should too.
Our personal trainers work alongside our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists every day. That collaboration allows us to create training programs that fit your goals, your body, and your life.
Whether your goal is to run your first 10K, improve your performance on the ice, feel stronger after physiotherapy, or finally stop wondering where to start at the gym, we’ll meet you where you are and build a plan that works for you.
Is Personal Training Right for You?
There’s a common misconception that personal training is reserved for athletes or people who already know their way around a gym.
In reality, many of our clients come to us because they don’t know where to begin. They’ve never been to a gym, but want to start and feel overwhelmed doing it alone. Some have done at home workouts (shout out, YouTube!) but really don’t know if they’re doing the right things.
Other clients may already have an exercise routine but have plateaued. They feel stuck, aren’t progressing, or need some additional motivation.
Then there are the athletes. They have different goals, but they’re asking the same question: “How can I get stronger and perform better?”
Working with a personal trainer at Optimize removes the guesswork. Instead of wondering if you’re doing the right exercises, following the right program, or progressing at the right pace, you have an expert guiding every step.
Personal Training Looks Different at Optimize
At Optimize Physiotherapy, Personal Training looks a little different.
Our personal trainers are part of the same team as our physiotherapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists. They collaborate regularly, share ideas, and work toward the same goal: helping you move well and feel stronger.
That collaboration creates a seamless experience for every client. If you’re recovering from an injury, returning to sport, or working toward a new fitness goal, your care doesn’t stop when one appointment ends. Your team is already communicating behind the scenes to keep your progress moving in the right direction.
You’re supported by a team that understands your goals and works together to help you reach them.
Our Process: Built Around You
Every training program begins with getting to know you.
Your first appointment is a comprehensive assessment where we’ll learn about your health history, movement patterns, previous injuries, lifestyle, and the goals you’re working toward. We also want to know what motivates you, what challenges you’ve faced in the past, and what success looks like for you.
From there, we build a personalized program that fits into your life.
Your training sessions may include strength training, mobility work, conditioning, stability exercises, or recovery strategies. Every exercise has a purpose, and every session builds on the one before it.
As your confidence grows and your body adapts, your program evolves too. Throughout your training, we’ll continue checking in on your strength, movement, and goals. We’ll celebrate the milestones, introduce new challenges when you’re ready, and make adjustments that keep you progressing safely.
Who We Work With
Our personal training clients are diverse, but all have one thing in common: that desire to move and feel better in their body – regardless of the goal they have.
In one session, our trainers might be coaching someone through their very first workout. Next, they’re working with an athlete preparing for an upcoming season.
That’s one of the things we love most about personal training. Every client brings a different story through the door.
Some of our clients are looking for accountability after years away from exercise. Others are rebuilding strength after an injury with support from their healthcare team.
We see busy professionals that want efficient workouts to fit into demanding schedules and athletes that are working toward a performance goal that matters to them.
Then there are clients who simply want everyday life to feel easier. Carrying groceries, hiking with friends, playing with the kids, or picking up grandkids all become easier when your body is stronger.
And those different clients and goals deserve different plans. That’s why every program is built around the individual standing in front of us.
Helping Athletes Perform at Their Best
Athletes train with purpose. Every workout should support the demands of the sport they love.
A hockey player needs explosive power through every stride. Volleyball players rely on quick reactions, strong landings, and the ability to change direction in an instant. Golfers generate power through mobility, balance, and rotational strength, while runners depend on efficient movement that holds up kilometre after kilometre.
Because every sport asks something different from the body, every training program should reflect those demands.
Our trainers build programs around your sport, your position, your season, and your goals. Training is different depending on your specific sport factors. Prepping for tryouts requires different programming than staying strong in the off season. If you’re recovering from an injury, your training is tailored around healing and rebuilding, but if you’re chasing your next PB, we’ll be creating a program that’s pushing you to your limits so you can achieve that.
All programs share one similarity. To help you perform with confidence.
To do that, we work with you to you improve your performance with better movement quality, improved stability, and increased resilience.
What to Expect During Your Personal Training Sessions
Every session has a purpose and no two sessions with us feel exactly the same.
Some days you’ll celebrate a win, and other days may be more challenging. You have space and support to slow things down to refine your technique, improve your mobility, or build a stronger foundation before taking the next step.
If you’ve never trained in a gym before, we’ll explain every exercise, answer every question, and help you build confidence with each session. If you’ve been training for years, we’ll continue challenging you with thoughtful progressions that support your goals.

Training takes place in our fully equipped clinic gym, where you’ll have access to professional equipment in a welcoming environment. You’ll never be left wondering what comes next because your trainer is there to coach, encourage, and adjust your program as you progress.
By the end of each session, you’ll understand why you’re doing every exercise and how it supports the bigger picture.
