What Is Collaborative Care?
How Physio, Massage, Chiropractic and Personal Training Work Together with collaborative care
At Optimize, our physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractor and personal trainers work in a collaborative care environment. This gives you access to a team that can communicate, share information and keep your goals at the centre of your care.
When you’re working toward feeling better, getting stronger, or getting back to the activities you love, often you may end up seeing more than one practitioner. You might start with physiotherapy after an injury, add massage to support recovery, work with a personal trainer as you rebuild strength, or see a chiropractor for additional musculoskeletal care.
Each practitioner has a different role and brings a different perspective to your care.
But the question is: are they working together?
What Is Collaborative Care?
Collaborative care means different health and movement professionals working together to support the same person and their goals.
Each practitioner brings their own area of specialized skills.
A physiotherapist can assess movement, build a rehabilitation plan, and help you return to the activities you enjoy. Massage therapists can support soft tissue health, recovery, and mobility. A chiropractor provides care focused on the musculoskeletal system, including the spine and joints. And a personal trainer helps you build strength, fitness, and physical capacity.
These services each have their own purpose, but they can also work together.
Having these services under one roof at Optimize Physio makes communication between practitioners easier. Your care can stay connected as your needs change and you move from recovery into strength, performance, or everyday activity.
Why Does Collaborative Care Matter?
Your care can become fragmented when you are seeing different practitioners in different places.
You end up explaining your history over and over to multiple practitioners. One practitioner may not know what another has recommended, so your rehabilitation plan and your training program can start heading in different directions.
Collaborative care brings those pieces together.
When your practitioners understand what the rest of your care looks like, they can make decisions with more context.
At Optimize, all professionals involved in your care can communicate with one another. Your entire team sees what’s being done, the progress you’re making, and they ensure that the treatment you receive is what you need.
The result is you spend less time connecting the dots with your individual practitioners yourself.
One Clinic. Multiple Areas of Support.
There is no single practitioner who does everything.
Physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, and personal training each serve different purposes. Having access to all four gives you a broader range of support without having to coordinate care across multiple clinics.
It also means your care can change as you progress.
Early in an injury, your focus may be restoring movement and function. Later, you may need to rebuild strength and prepare for the demands of your sport or daily life.
Your needs do not stay the same throughout recovery. Your care should not have to either.
What Does Collaborative Care Look Like in Practice?
Rather than operating in isolation, each practitioner on your team brings a distinct set of skills to your care plan:

Physiotherapy
Focuses on movement, physical function, and rehabilitation. Our physiotherapists assess your needs and build targeted treatment and exercise plans to support injury recovery, post-surgical rehabilitation, and sports performance.

Massage Therapy
Works with soft tissues to support recovery, mobility, and relaxation—whether you are training for an event, managing desk-related tightness, or supporting overall movement.

Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care focuses on the musculoskeletal system, including the spine and joints. At Optimize, chiropractic care can be part of a broader approach to movement and physical health, with treatment based on your individual needs and goals.

Personal Training
Personal training helps you build strength, fitness, and physical capacity through a program designed around you. That could mean learning how to use the gym, building strength after rehabilitation, improving your conditioning or training toward a specific goal.
Do You Need to See Everyone?
Just because we’re a collaborative clinic, it does not mean you need appointments with every practitioner in the clinic.
The right combination of your care depends on your needs, goals, and stage of care.
Our role is to help you figure out what makes sense, not add services you do not need.
What Happens When Your Practitioners Communicate?
Good communication means you are not responsible for carrying your entire care plan between appointments. You do not need to worry about the details from one appointment to the next to make sure that your individual practitioners all know what’s going on.
Our practitioners know what you are working on, what has already been addressed, and where you are going next.
The details will look different for every person.
The goal remains the same: your care should make sense as a whole.

Getting Started
Beginning your care with us is straightforward:
- Initial Consultation & Assessment: Book an initial visit with any practitioner. Our physiotherapists, chiropractor, and Fascial Stretch Therapist all do a full assessment before treating, so be sure to book “Assessment” with them for your first appointment. Massage therapy and personal training to do require an initial assessment. Simply choose the service directly.
- Collaborative Plan: During your assessment, your practitioner will evaluate your goals and recommend any additional services that would support your progress. Massage therapists and personal trainers will recommend based on your appointment.
- Integrated Care: Your practitioners coordinate directly behind the scenes, adjusting your plan as you move toward full performance.
When Should You Consider Collaborative Care?
Collaborative care can be helpful if you:
- Are recovering from an injury and want to return to activity
- Are returning to sport
- Have a specific performance goal
- Have recurring movement concerns
- Want support with both recovery and training
- Already see multiple practitioners and want your care to feel more connected
You also do not need to know exactly which practitioner to book before you reach out online or call 780-455-5068.
If you begin with a physiotherapist and they feel a chiropractor or massage therapist would be a better fit for your goals, they will help you with that. And as you progress, other services may be recommended to support you.
Our chiropractor and massage therapists all approach collaborative care the same and will recommend other professionals if they feel you could benefit from them.
One Team Working toward your goals
Our physiotherapists, massage therapists, chiropractor, and personal trainers bring different areas of health care together under one roof.
You get the benefit of a team while keeping your care focused on one thing: you and what your goals are.
It doesn’t matter where you start with us, our entire team has your back to ensure that you get the care that you deserve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral to book an appointment?
No, a medical referral is generally not required to access physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, or personal training. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so we recommend checking your specific coverage details.
Are treatments covered by private health insurance?
Most extended health insurance plans cover physiotherapy, chiropractic care, and registered massage therapy. Direct billing may be available depending on your provider. Personal training is typically not covered under standard insurance unless part of a specific rehabilitation package.
Can I book appointments with multiple practitioners on the same day?
Yes – and no. Combining treatments on the same day can be an effective way to streamline your care, but it’s not always recommended. Our team can assist in scheduling back-to-back appointments that fit your schedule and care plan.
